چکیده

Let pn be the number of consecutive positive summands and let qn be the number of consecutive negative summands that appear in the classical Riemann’s rearrangement of the alternating harmonic series to sum a prescribed real number s. Assume that s > log 2 and let x = (1/4)e2s. It is shown that the sequence qn is constant equal to 1, and that the values of pn become stabilized: Eventually pn = bxc or pn = bxc + 1. Moreover, it is shown that x is rational if and only if the sequence pn is eventually periodic. The sequence pn is eventually constant if and only if x is integer, in which case pn = bxc for n big enough. Similar results are also true for s < log 2.

Assume, now, that (1) is C 1-s...

Mod p structure of alternating and non-alternating multiple harmonic sums

The well-known Wolstenholme’s Theorem says that for every prime p > 3 the (p−1)-st partial sum of the harmonic series is congruent to 0 modulo p2. If one replaces the harmonic series by ∑ k≥1 1/n for k even, then the modulus has to be changed from p2 to just p. One may consider generalizations of this to multiple harmonic sums (MHS) and alternating multiple harmonic sums (AMHS) which are partia...

Smectic pores and defect cores.

Riemann's minimal surfaces, a one-parameter family of minimal surfaces, describe a bicontinuous lamellar system with pores connecting alternating layers. We demonstrate explicitly that Riemann's minimal surfaces are composed of a nonlinear sum of two oppositely handed helicoids.

The starlikeness, convexity, covering theorem and extreme points of p-harmonic mappings

The main aim of this paper is to introduce three classes $H^0_{p,q}$, $H^1_{p,q}$ and $TH^*_p$ of $p$-harmonic mappings and discuss the properties of mappings in these classes. First, we discuss the starlikeness and convexity of mappings in $H^0_{p,q}$ and $H^1_{p,q}$. Then establish the covering theorem for mappings in $H^1_{p,q}$. Finally, we determine the extreme points of the class $TH^*_{p}$.

Random Harmonic Series

Here the positive and negative terms partly cancel, allowing the series to converge. To a probabilist, this alternating series suggests choosing plus and minus signs at random, by tossing a fair coin. Formally, let (εj) ∞ j=1 be independent random variables with common distribution P (εj = 1) = P (εj = −1) = 1/2. Then, Kolmogorov’s three series theorem [1, Theorem 22.8] or the martingale conver...
